Spotted in the Tsinghua University (清华大学) elevator:

Courtliness each other, on crowd, first out then in, and acting quickly when using the elevator.

Logical thinking

One thing I notice more and more in China is the seemingly total lack of thought processing applied in design and construction of… well… nearly everything. An example is this stairacse photographed here on the left : notice the slope provided for bicycles. Also notice the fact it doesn’t reach the bottom – so you still have to lift the bike up one step.

In LoWu, ShenZhen (罗胡,深圳) – one of the popular border crossings with Hong Kong – I have often been baffled by the two escalators provided to travellers after immigration formalities on the Chinese side : one of them starts half way up, so you have half a set of stairs to climb first. Then there’s the drainage pipes in our office building – when it rains, the roof water is poured all over the courtyard creating big puddles where everyone walks. Why they could not extend the pipes, either to the ground or to a different side of the building is entirely beyond me.

But this is China. Though growing at an astonishing pace, it does not take one long to be reminded that this is indeed still a developing country. So boys and girls, enjoy the quirks while they last!
