This Christmas & New Year’s was spent in Hong Kong. For sure I can say that it’s nice to see leaves on trees again – as is being able to eat a meal without drinking a barrel of (cooking) oil to go with it.
Thanks to our colonial history Hong Kong has long celebrated Christmas as one of the major annual festivals here. Such activities included getting pierced by Christmas tree lighting, overpaying for Christmas food from local supermarket chains, and indulging in the delights of children attempting to sing childish Christmas carols… seemingly underwater, in most Hong Kong shopping malls. Meanwhile the APM mall in Kwun Tong (觀塘) decided to outfit two poor employees as walking Christmas trees, and thousands participated in the first ever Santathon.
Wherever you were in the world, I hope that you had a pleasant festive season too : be it Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.
And while i’m at it, since i’m five days late anyways, I also wish everyone a happy and healthy new year – or, for those of you in the far east where money is evidently more important than your health: Happy Prosperous Year!

Happy Chinese New Year to you! Hey I went to STC too back in ’96. Now in California. Excellent blog. Keep it up!
