Chinese Traffic 中国道路情况

This is for all Chinese drivers out there – sorry, did not write this in English:

For some reason my WordPress had been disabled for the past few months due to some bug (security breach?) that messed up the option settings. Only after digging around online did I find a solution – somehow the plugins path had changed and subsequently crashed every post I made.

This has finally been fixed, which means i’m back to writing boring blog entries again.

Be warned.

Money for nothing?

- you could try hypnotism, as some bloke in Italy has reportedly done, and managed to squander 800 euros from a bank at Ancona in northern Italy.

Unfortunately for him he was captured on CCTV – next time he should hyptonise the TV viewers also.

I’m reminded of a Derren Brown clip (available on YouTube) in which he goes shopping in New York and purchases items using blank pieces of paper.

It’s amazing to think how easy it is to control our minds – but then again it’s happening daily in normal life. The worst part is we often just don’t know it, or when it’s happening.Discount viagra online

Still no laptop

General | Posted by Terence
Jan 18 2008

I mentioned back in August that I ordered a $150 Medison Celebrity laptop. Well, of course, it still hasn’t arrived.

In fact, medisonscam.info haven’t received theirs either,
and nor have Crave.

Apparently nobody’s has.

Well, some things sound too good to be true. And this was definitely one of them.

Seasons Greetings

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

There. I said it. Nevermind that most people in China don’t know what it’s all about, nor do most people even know when it is. And if the official media are discouraged from reporting Christmas or told not to talk too much about this strange foreign Christian festival, the shops are certainly learning how to cash in on it.

In Chinese of course, we say 圣诞快乐 (Trad: 聖誕快樂) – 圣诞 meaning ‘holy birth’. I often wonder how many people understand what this even means – or indeed how many believe that the holy birth is of Mao Zedong himself, incidentally born Boxing Day 1893.

In any event Christmas is hear to stay, and in this increasingly globalised city why not?

$150 laptop – ordered and waiting

Aug 15 2007

I have just put an order through for the USD $150 Medison Celebrity notebook. If not a scam, this would be the first successful attempt at creating a budget laptop; OLPC‘s original attempt at a $100 laptop is now estimated to cost around $200, and delays have meant it won’t be released till later this year.

The specs are reasonable – a Celeron 1.5GHz with 256mb RAM and 40gb HDD. Wireless LAN and 14″ WXGA screen included. Although shipping and service charge (2checkout.com will charge approx. $15 for processing) are not included, this will still turn out to be a very cheap laptop.

If it exists.

I won’t join the speculation on whether this is a scam or not (I will find out sooner or later) – but in any case 2checkout.com withhold payment from Medison pending my satisfactory reception of goods. At this point, I don’t see how I can lose out, but with a price tag that low it’s a gamble worth going for.

A push start from neutral

‘Neutral Zone’, that is.

I found an article in the India Times recently quite amusing, regarding a train that got stuck in a neutral zone and had to be pushed by fellow passengers.

I’ve heard of push starting cars… but never push starting trains! And coming from India, where there are jokes aplenty about the railway system, this was all the more amusing.

(Neutral Zones act as a circuit break so as not to affect the rest of the circuit should a problem occur – and it helps the transmission of electricity over long distances also).

BREAKING NWS: txt msgs bad for lang

General | Posted by Terence
Apr 28 2007

According to CNN, an education commission in Ireland is making the claim that text messages are posing a threat to writing standards amongst Irish schoolchildren. My gosh, what next: the claim that excessive consumption of Guinness will cause drunkenness?

With text messages limited at 160 characters, it’s no surprise that users attempt to cram in as much as possible. One look at any online forum frequented by teenagers, and you need a dictionary to decipher the many acronyms and abbreviations used – not to mention have a good imagination trying to understand much of the grammar. IMHO our online language skills are deteriorating. Whether this is related to txt msging or not I don’t know, or maybe kids these days have developed an ingenious way of writing in plain text without requiring encryption. But the trends are definitely worrying!

Interestingly though, not everyone believes instant messaging is bad. A note on Techdirt claims that IM has helped kids feel more comfortable with writing, with the page having drawn interesting comments from others. Some other people have also made similar claims.

But wind back to 2003? Carl Sharp certainly had a problem with IM.

When on IM I always try to type as proper as possible : because typing is fast and I don’t save much time otherwise, but also because I believe language is something we should cherish. Abbreviations are great used in moderation, and with 160 characters only they can be a saviour – but letting it become your writing habit is the danger.

And that’s where people should be careful (or shot, for writing badly).
